Reddit is where non-technical founders go when they need something built: an MVP, a Chrome extension, a scraper, a fix for a site another freelancer left half-done. The paid requests are public, and they're answered by whoever shows up first with something relevant.

These are the formal job posts. Many more buyers never write "[Hiring]": they ask "can anyone recommend someone for this?" in r/startups, r/smallbusiness or r/Entrepreneur.

How to win these jobs

  • Answer the technical question in your first reply: which stack, roughly how long, the one risk you see. It proves you read the post.
  • Link one similar project (a repo, a demo, a screenshot) rather than a CV.
  • For MVP requests, offer a fixed-price first milestone. It lowers the buyer's risk and gets you started.
  • Be wary of equity-only or "rev-share" posts unless that's what you want. Filter for posts with a stated budget.
  • Follow up once, a day later, with a question about their timeline. Most freelancers never follow up.

The clients who never post "[Hiring]"

Job boards are the visible part. The bigger pool is people describing the problem in their own words ("our site looks amateur", "who should I hire for this?") in the communities where they already spend time. They rarely use the keywords a search alert would catch, and the first genuinely helpful reply usually wins.

That's what Hubbub is for: it reads every new post in the communities you choose, flags the people asking for what you do, and drafts a reply in your voice. You post it from your own account.

Questions

Is it allowed to reply to [Hiring] posts on Reddit?+

Yes. [Hiring] posts exist so developers can respond. Read each community's rules first: most want replies by comment or DM as the post says, and some require your own [For Hire] post to follow a set format.

Where do people hire developers on Reddit?+

r/forhire and r/hireaprogrammer carry formal requests; game work goes to r/gameDevClassifieds. Founders also ask "can anyone build this?" in r/startups, r/SaaS and r/Entrepreneur.

Are Reddit development jobs legitimate?+

Most are. Protect yourself the usual way: agree scope and price in writing, take a deposit or use milestones, and be cautious with anyone who wants work before any payment.
